Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Rock on, ancient queen.

WORDS

I’m really happy with how this new Thekla painting came together. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles to it, putting the emphasis instead on her own innate charisma. I took that as a challenge to instead make all of the little elements sing, from the details of her gear to an impression of their textures. Like, I wanted the jacket to appear tangible and this time around that worked. It’s all in service of framing her face and the raw emotions she emotes.

ART I LIKE

I first became familiar with Noriyoshi Ohrai’s art through his incredible Godzilla movie posters. They have an unmistakable explosive energy to them that perfectly matches the feeling of those movies. I simply stare at them any time they come through my feed, y’know?

That led me to look more into his work and yo, his Star Wars paintings are properly out of this world. I’m so used to the sort of Lucasfilm house style that’s palatable to an American audience that it’s like getting reminded all over again of how it felt to originally see these movies.

He also did some utterly rad video game work, using such unexpected and wonderful color combinations. As an artist, I’m so in awe of how he makes this palette work. It’s THRILLING to see, honestly. I don’t play video games so I’m coming into this only knowing the painting itself (Metal Gear maybe? I literally don’t know.) but it makes me want to learn everything. The man did his job!

My friend David also turned me onto Ohrai’s book covers which are about the coolest things I’ve ever seen. More of those interesting uses of green but also such outstanding composition. I know nothing about this book but this cover sold me on it.

Abolish and prosecute ICE.

This ruined me for store-bought dip.

FOOD, DUDE!

After the success of last week’s fiesta dip I wanted to make my own French Onion Dip. So I did that.

I made this recipe and added in my homemade red wine vinegar while sauteing the onions and also added some garlic powder to the mix. Because why the hell not! It’s wildly full of flavor in a way that I wasn’t prepared for, more reminiscent of French Onion Soup than any of the dips I’ve had before. Couldn’t be happier with how this turned out.

Love you more,
Rob
