For my new Thekla painting my goal was to capture her chaotic, manic energy. I set out to make it full of bright, contrasting colors flying all over the place to replicate the feeling of seeing her on the screen and in the ring spreading her own distinct genre of violence.

Happy Pride Month! I wish you a life filled with joy, beauty and wonder.

Monday night my friend David and I went to see the live Comedy Bang! Bang! show here in Kansas City at the gorgeous Uptown Theater. CBB’s my favorite podcast now and it was a thrill to see it in person for the first time. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s an improv show set up like an interview talkshow, where the host Scott Aukerman is only given each character’s name and one thing about them, normally a profession. Then they riff off of each other as he learns about these insane people. For instance, at our show we had a fountain enthusiast, a cook, an intimacy coordinator and a singer. Two were returning characters and the other two were brand new.

With all of the hard times happening in the world, it’s good to break it up with some goofy laughs. It’s especially nice to do it in a theater full of people laughing along, too.

There was a TV show version of the podcast for a few years on IFC that you can watch on AMC+, which at one point had Weird Al Yankovich as the bandleader! At a time when I’m cancelling a lot of my streaming services, I’m gladly subscribing to the paid tier of CBB which has a lot of fun other shows like Threedom, The Neighborhood Listen and Scott Hasn’t Seen (the show that actually inspired my AFI40 project). There’s also an occasional show with Bobby Moynihan as Batman that’s one of the dang funniest things ever for us comics nerds. All for nine bucks a month!

A delightful way to start work each day with some genuine laughs.

Overall, they’ve been sleeping a lot lately. It’s hot and humid outside and they’re avoiding that nonsense by napping through it. The neighbor behind us has a black cat that they let out, and it likes to sit outside the window and taunt Kima and Tikka. Then I go out to tell it to go home and the Tigers go back to being asleep.

It’s a hard life for them but I’m doing my part to help them manage.
