Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Pale shadow, she is a dragon.

WORDS

Thekla falls into that category of “Subject Who Gives Me a Lot to Work With” and that’s always a ton of fun. I wanted this to have a bit of a horror feel to it so I took inspiration from Japanese horror movies like Ringu and Ju-On with the color palette to give it all a very eerie feeling. And if you guessed that I’m already planning what to do next with her, you know me very well!

OLDEST KANSAS CITY BY KATY SCHAMBERGER

My wife Katy’s latest book Oldest Kansas City is now ready for preorder! She’s worked really hard on this, doing deep research in all corners of the city to find as many gems and stories as possible.

Here’s the description:

The first bank robbed in peacetime, the world’s oldest continuously operating movie theater, the building where professional baseball changed forever—you’ll discover each of these landmarks and more in Oldest Kansas City.

Author Katy Schamberger takes you on a trip back in time to Kansas City’s earliest days along the Missouri River bluffs and through the ensuing decades that saw equal parts devastation and triumph. You’ll discover the far-reaching influence of Kansas City, from what we eat (the Happy Meal started here) to what we wear (America’s first cowboy boot) to what we watch (was Mickey Mouse really created here?).

Grab extra napkins and take a mouthwatering tour of Kansas City’s barbecue history, including the world’s first barbecue museum. As you explore the city, tune your radio to KPRS 103.3 FM, the country’s longest-running black-owned radio station. Or enjoy your soundtrack live at the oldest still-operating jazz club in the US.

Schamberger, a tireless advocate for exploration both near and far, brings her love of discovery and exploration to the pages of Oldest Kansas City. She balances well-known Kansas City lore with people, places, and stories that have been lost to the passage of time—until now.

If you’ve met Katy, you know exactly what her unique energy is all about and how passionate she gets about telling the stories of others. Preorders are really important to a book’s success, so it would mean a lot to us if you could get one for yourself. They start shipping on September 1st. Thanks!

(It’s her birthday next weekend if you want to show some love!)

ART I LIKE

‘Show Window’ by Reginald Marsh, 1934

I adore how jam-packed the composition for this is, yet still so readable. At first glance the subjects of the painting seems to be the mannequins but as you look closer it’s actually the women looking through the window at the display.

It’s a deceptive use of space, that we’re actually looking through two windows at a building’s corner to look at these ladies admiring the store’s offerings. The sense of depth is furthered by the buildings behind them.

And then there’s all of the details of the display, from the fabrics and their patterns to the sale tags, that fills in the story that the painting is telling.

Important Breakfast Burrito Update

FOOD, DUDE!

I figured you were sitting there wondering what I’m doing with my breakfast burritos nowadays, so friend I’m here for you:

First, I start baking some tater rounds in the oven. Then I put a few of my garden bell peppers that I’ve soaked in olive oil I told you about last week in a pan on low heat. The oil from those becomes the oil I sauté everything else in. I’ll add some chopped red onion and another bit of fresh chopped bell pepper (for texture).

While that cooks I crack three eggs into a bowl and splash in some hot sauce and homemade red wine vinegar along with dashes of freeze-dried garlic, salt and black pepper, then I whisk that up.

Then I add a Beyond Meat breakfast sausage patty to the sauté pan and let that cook for about three minutes. While that’s cooking I mince some garlic (about four cloves), flip the patty and break it up and add the garlic as well as a splash of red wine vinegar.

After about a minute I add in the egg mix and scramble it all up. I also lay out a couple tortillas and spread some of what Katy calls ‘Scham Sauce’ (a cup of avocado mayo, 1 tbsp honey, a head of minced fresh garlic, a lime juiced and zested, and 1-2 tbsp of either chipotles in adobo sauce or Sriracha, all mixed up in a food processor) on the tortillas.

As soon as the eggs are solid I turn the heat off and add a couple slices of cheese on top. Once they begin to melt I mix it all up and spread it out on the tortillas along with the potatoes which should be done at this point.

It’s a powerhouse of flavor and keeps me full and fueled for about five hours! There’s a variety of textures with all of those delightful flavors working together as a savory symphony.

Love you more,Rob
