Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. There's a whole lot more to life than work and worry.

WORDS
I was able to fit in a couple more Algonauts this week. Above is Princess Lilac Wing putting a spear through a skeleton’s stupid face. For some of the character names like hers and Shadow Netwalker II I’m trying to inject some questions like, “Is there a Queen Lilac Wing or a King Azure Wing?” or “What’s up with the first Shadow Netwalker?” I may not even get into any of this in the book but it helps to make it all feel like a bigger fleshed-out world.
And here’s Evan Finesse wrestling an axe-wielding robot with an emoji on its chest, because hell yeah:

That’s right, the crew doesn’t just fight skeletons. There’s also some got dang axe-murderer robots to contend with.
Next up will be Doorbuster and some designs for the main character Nostalya and her companion Korman. I also need to do some environment designs for the world(s) they make their way through. Maybe some sample pages to work out the approach I want. And of course the hard work of writing it all out and then thumbnailing everything. And then drawing it. And then everything that comes after that.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Here’s a preview of my first-ever Josh Alexander painting!

WHAT I LIKED THIS WEEK
Legion of Superheroes: The Curse by Paul Levitz, Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt collects some of my very favorite superhero comics. To my taste the Levitz/ Giffen/ Mahlstedt era of the Legion is the best of the best, one of the top examples of achievement in the superhero genre. Like, the title has around 30 main(!) characters, each often with their own supporting cast, all of the villains, and then DOZENS of alien worlds each with their own populations. It’s why this book is considered a bit of a nightmare assignment for artists but not only did Giffen and Mahlstedt do it, but they did it GREAT and so damn stylish.
All of that, plus Levitz gave each of them their own unique voice, their own motivations and relationships and then wove all of that into massive stories on a galactic scale. And fun!
Plus, the collection has an annual drawn by Dave Gibbons right before he started working on Watchmen, doing some truly excellent work. I’m so glad DC’s slowly putting these high-quality collections out of the Legion and I’m super excited that the theoretical next one will be full of Steve Lightle art!
The Burning Room by Michael Connelly is one of the better Bosch books. It serves up the best parts of Harry Bosch stories with his commitment to finding justice for the victims, how that’s so often inconvenient to both internal police politics and city politics, a dissatisfaction with the people in charge of the force, and then a nice dose of Harry continuing to grow as a person. I listen to these audiobooks while I’m working mostly because they’re the prose version of easy-listening but occasionally they’re pretty dang good and this is one of those.
The Hacks season four finale, and the season overall, was a blast to watch. It starts off being about Debra being the first female late night host and her enmity with Ava, leading to the two being pretty far apart but slowly realizing how much they need one another. And then in the penultimate episode it all gets blown up, leading to a chaotic af finale. Oh, and there’s the subplot with whatever was going on with Dance Mom and her hardcore ASMR fetish. And there’s also that Rabid Lassie subplot. It’s like the new hottest club in New York.
I watched the first season of Platonic, starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen after it got recommended when I finished The Studio. If you’re a fellow fan of shows like Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared or Netflix’s Love, this is right in that sweet spot of comedy and drama. Byrne’s character is a stay-at-home mom whose youngest is now in school, leaving her to figure out what to do with her life. Rogen’s character is recently-divorced and in a dream job he doesn’t really love anymore. They were both best friends in college but had drifted apart and are now hanging out again and getting up to some nonsense. Maybe it’s my age and longterm affinity for a lot of the actors involved but this hit me just right. There’s a second season coming soon, so that’s cool.

Unreal colors.
YOU GOOD?
We have a couple hydrangea’s at the end of our walkway and once they flower and their colors start setting in they’re total stunners. I look out over it from my studio space and it’s fun watching people walking by stop to take a moment and look at them.
Last year they didn’t flower at all and one of them almost died off a couple years ago but with some extra care they’re bouncing back in a gorgeous way.
Love you more,Rob
