Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. I only find it slips away to grey.
WORDS
My idea for this new Orange Cassidy painting was to almost carve his likeness out of stripes of orange and teal, using only a few shadows to make it look like him. It was a fun challenge that I think worked out successfully, especially when I added the final deepest shadows with some Payne’s Gray along with those blocks of space to frame his face. I like that the warm and cool colors play off of each other the same way that the kinetic brushstrokes play off of his laid-back demeanor.
I made this right before his recent injury and its debut was put on hold until he was back in action. I’m glad that he’s healed back up, most importantly, and then that we can now make these signed prints available!

WHAT’S GOOD IN THE HOOD
Here’s a few more of the 9×6 paintings I’m making of the houses on my block. The one above in my opinion is the prettiest, between both the architecture and the landscaping. Because of that I gave it a little more detail than with the others because every little bit of it is beautiful.

This one has a gorgeous tiled roof but it’s hard to see with all of the lush growth around it, so I made the story of this composition more about the vegetation and the light shining through it as a framing device for the house itself. I didn’t have the highest hopes for this but it turned out pretty nice once I was done.

This house has a lot of bushes and trees in front of it so I thought the story here was about the structure almost flowing out of the greenery, and then the warmth of the sun shining onto it. That gave those warm bits a nice glow to them, I think.

The story for this one was about the diagonal push of the leaves on the trees playing with and against the curved slopes of the roof. It gave it a whimsy I didn’t plan on but leaned into as it started happening.
I’ve got three more to share on Sunday and then this fun little project will be done. I enjoy how it’s grounded me with my immediate neighborhood and I look forward to handing them out to everyone at the end!

A RUDY OF DEAD BARBIES
My neighbor across the street hangs a bunch of dead Barbie’s from her tree every year in October for Halloween. It’s unsettling, it’s not my personal favorite thing, but she loves doing it. You do you. We also live a block down from an elementary school and the parents walk their kids past her house. The kids LOVE these dead dolls, their faces light up but it’s clear their parents don’t feel the same way.
One morning early last week she came up to me, crying and asking if I’d seen anything suspicious going on. We occasionally have car break-ins and I thought that was what she was asking about. It wasn’t. Apparently someone in the cover of darkness had cut all of her dead Barbie’s down and stolen them. She said that some mom had lectured her the week prior about ‘bondage Barbie’s’ and my neighbor straight-faced said to me, “They’re not bondage! They’re dead Barbie’s!”
And then a couple days later the most incredible thing happened.
After school let out a couple girls walked up to my neighbor with some Barbie’s and gave them to her. Then more kids. Then more. They were lined up, all giving her these soon-to-be-dead Barbie’s. It was a Rudy of dead Barbies. She was clutching these dolls close to her chest, smiling and crying and thanking these kids like some sort of Halloween Miracle and I couldn’t believe what was happening.
Soon enough she was out there, painting the dolls bloody and hanging them from her tree to delight all of the schoolkids. What a world!

And remember: It’s not bondage, it’s just dead Barbie’s.
Love you more,
Rob
