Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies.

WORDS

Whether it’s her elaborate entrance attire or her overall presence, I’ve found I enjoy making paintings of Megan Bayne. There’s a stature to her that gives me a lot to work with, tapping into the superhero comics that originally inspired me to make art as a kid. There’s a lot of directions I can go with the paintings!

She also fits right in with all of the painting studies I’ve done recently of statues. Statuesque beauty, right? A few days before I started this portrait I had done the above statue study of a Roman funerary figure and the techniques and colors I’d used for it seemed perfect for my approach with this painting of her. I actually kept it displayed on my drawing board while I was working so that I could look at the problem solving done on it and apply those discoveries to my new work. It all connects!

ART I LIKE

Last week I found out that not only was there an I Love Lucy comic strip in the mid-50’s but that it was written and drawn by the great Bob Oksner. While not a household name, Oksner did a ton of licensed comics work back in the day, most notably DC’s Jerry Lewis comic. He also had a run on Shazam! that’s stood the test of time.

Looking at these, I can’t help but feel they were an inspiration for Jaime Hernandez of Love & Rockets fame. It’s there in the DNA with the wonderful acting, the deceptively-simple line work and the pitch-perfect minimalism. Also, what a gorgeous way to depict Lucy’s signature hair, right?

The writing is also in line with the tone of the show, of which I’m a lifelong mega-fan. Katy and I were together for a few years and I was flipping through the channels and landed on a TV Land marathon of I Love Lucy and there was this slow dread creeping across Katy’s eyes as I started quoting the dialogue of every episode and giving in-depth factoids about each one. Somehow it’d never come up in the four or five years we’d been together at that point that I held all of this arcane knowledge.

But even I didn’t know that this strip existed! What a delightful find. Just LOOK at the body language in those silhouettes in that next-to-last panel! Gah, it’s so great.

So much yum.

FOOD, DUDE!

Last week I made my own taco sauce from scratch and I had no idea that taco sauce could be this good. I bought some from the grocery store a couple weeks ago, having not had any in a long time, and found it to essentially just be watered-down tomato sauce mixed with vinegar with the tiniest hint of seasoning. But then it hit me: VINEGAR. I MAKE MY OWN VINEGAR. I bet I can make this too! So here’s what I did:

  • 1 16 oz can tomato sauce

  • 2/3 cup water

  • 3 tbsp homemade IPA vinegar

  • 1 tbsp ground cumin

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp sea salt (and more to your taste)

  • ½ tsp ancho cili powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ½ white sugar

  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper

I put them all in a small pot together and lightly whisked it together over low heat. I brought it to a low simmer until it thickened just a bit, around 20 minutes. And that’s about it!

I let it cool down to room temperature in a glass mason jar with the lid off, then put the lid on and stored it in the fridge.

I’m having a lot of fun with these homemade vinegars, taking the mindset that anything that would pair well with a meal would also work great as an ingredient in the meal. IPA’s go wonderfully with most Mexican cuisine so it makes sense that it would be so tasty in a sauce.

Love you more,
Rob
