Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry.
WORDS
Like I’ve been saying a lot lately with my paintings, I’m trying to find some sort of story to tell with each one. For this new Kyle Fletcher portrait, that story comes down to one word: Pink. I love the lighting of his entrance, and I also love the tube of Opera Rose watercolor I picked up and it seemed like an easy way in to this piece. There’s a variety of shades of pink, as well as the explosion of movement created by the splatters of masking fluid at various stages of the process to give the whole composition a kinetic vibe.

ART I LIKE
Larry Stroman is one of those artists with an undeniable style that seems sort of impossible to fully wrap my head around. He first caught my eye when he took over X-Factor with writer Peter David, making a book that looked like nothing else.

Stroman’s one of those artists who’s almost impossible to compare to anyone else. There’s notes of Michael Golden and maybe something like Arthur Rackham, but really it’s all Stroman.

He also had a notable run on Alien Legion, which I regret I haven’t seen much of but what I have seen is equally gorgeous. That was his highest profile book before X-Factor and it’s clear why it put him on the radar for such a high profile gig. That same mix of stylish linework, dynamic layouts and exciting figure work.

He’ll still pop up on projects here and there and it’s always a welcome surprise when he does, like when he returned to Alien Legion a few years back. Stroman’s imaginative character designs are perfect for a book like that.

Signs of life!
NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATE
On my daily walks I’ve noticed that buds are starting to develop on the trees in our part of town. The winter hasn’t been particularly rough this year but it’s still energizing to see the plants start to wake up. It’ll drop below freezing again this coming week but hopefully everything will be fine.
I started walking again a couple weeks ago. I realized I’d gotten very sedentary going back to late 2020 (hooray depression!) and I’m making a purposeful effort to get back into the swing. For a decade we lived in downtown Kansas City and I was able to walk everywhere for pretty much anything I wanted, so I did just that. We’re in a residential neighborhood now and there’s nowhere to walk TO that I really want to visit, which made it even easier to get out of the habit. But walking for the joy of it is a very nice thing unto itself and that’s enough for me.
Love you more,
Rob
