Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Once I mess with your mind, your little heart won't beat the same.

WORDS

This new portrait of Hangman Adam Page is all about his intense stare. A friend on social referred to it as a ‘feral’ look and that seems like a perfect description. Like, if you were at a bar, heard someone break a beer bottle and looked up to see these eyes staring back at you? Forget about it.

Beyond that, I had a lot of fun with the colors. It’s some kind of mix of impressionist palettes and George Jones singing that he’s still got neon in his veins. I didn’t expect Hangman to be such a versatile subject when I first started working with AEW but man, he’s quickly become a favorite to build a painting around.

Abolish and prosecute ICE.

ART I LIKE

I’m pretty sure the first time I saw Brian Stelfreeze’s art was when he was doing some amazing painted covers for Batman: Shadow of the Bat. There was a bit of a pulp influence but also a mix of art deco and his own angular style that immediately captured my interest. As a kid, what he was doing seemed so impossible and filled me with wonder.

His high contrast entry in the original Batman: Black & White series showed a whole other level to his art, which at the time I only knew from his paintings. His eye for contrast and composition carried right through to a project without any color. I want to say my main knowledge of black and white comics was limited to the likes of Frank Miller and Alex Toth, so this highly stylized project hit my brain just as hard as his painted work.

He’s worked consistently and at a high level in comics for decades, recently doing a bestselling run on Black Panther. The above piece was colored digitally but I love seeing how strong this art is on its own. His style is so distinctive and recognizable at first glance, while also being dynamic and awesome to look at.

If you follow him on social media, he also shares a lot of the painted commissions he does, often of non-comics subjects like this stunning Lucille Ball portrait. It’s pretty obvious he’s a huge influence on me, isn’t it? His bold color choices and compositions are peerless in my opinion.

Just like how I would look at his Batman covers as a kid and think they were impossible magic, I still feel the same today.

I’m a food photographer now.

FOOD, DUDE!

I made a variation on a green goddess sauce to use for our breakfast casseroles. It accentuates the savory flavors of the dish but is also refreshing on its own. Here’s what I did:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 chopped avocado

  • 4 tbsp sour cream

  • 2 tbsp avocado mayo

  • 1 tbsp of my homemade white wine vinegar

  • 1 tsp lemon zest

  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice

  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, shredded

  • 2 tbsp fresh chopped chives

  • Salt and coarse black pepper to taste

Put all of the ingredients in a food processor and mix that sumbitch up until it’s smooth. I’m storing it in a small mason jar in the fridge, which should last for a few days.

I messed up and juiced half a lemon, which was way too much. I added more sour cream and mayo to cut the acidity. I’ll definitely be aware of that next time around.

I also discovered that it makes a dang fine dip.

Love you more,
Rob
